Philadelphia’s Presenting Company for Contemporary Theatre,
The Brick Playhouse Unveils its 2005 Playwriting Award Winners
Philadelphia, PA April 26, 2005 - The Brick Playhouse is pleased to announce the winners of its Fourth Annual Playwriting Awards.  Each award winner will receive a spotlighted staged reading as part of the In-Between Stage reading program, as well as a cash award and consideration for production in The Brick’s 2005-06 season.

The Roger Cornish Playwriting Award for a full-length play by a Philadelphia-area playwright is presented to Alexander E. Dremann for “Split Pea Pod,” a comedy about a man who splits in half.  With a Master’s degree in Playwriting from the University of Southern California, Dremann has had his plays produced across the country over the past decade, from New York to San Francisco, Philadelphia to LA.  Past work from Dremann has been hailed as “sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious” by LA Weekly and “evocative” by Backstage West.  One of the masterminds behind Philadelphia’s sketch comedy runaway hit SKITSoid, you’ll be sure to see more of Alex Dremann.

The Brick Playhouse Playwriting Award for a full-length by a playwright from outside the Philadelphia area is bestowed upon Julius J. Galacki for “Black Flamingos.”   A native of Long Branch, NJ, Galacki currently resides in Los Angeles.  Galacki is a graduate of the playwriting program at the Yale School of Drama as well as having a B.F.A. from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and an M.A. from the interdisciplinary Gallatin School.  He has had plays produced on Theatre Row in New York City.  Seven monologues from a number of Galacki’s plays, including a monologue from “Black Flamingos,” will appear in the four-volume series Audition Arsenal, to be published by Smith & Kraus in late spring/early summer of 2005.

The In-Between Stage is The Brick’s ongoing series of script-in-hand readings of new plays in progress.  Admission is free, but donations are welcome.  Please check out www.TheBrickPlayhouse.org for updates on when and where to join us in celebration of these remarkable playwrights.
